Mogadishu keeps its weather simple. Two degrees north of the equator, the Indian Ocean city locks in highs between 28°C (82°F) and 32°C (90°F) every single month. Humidity stays pegged at 70 percent. Only the rain changes, and that rhythm tells you when to arrive. East Africa's monsoon cycle rules here. Two dry spells, two wet ones. December through March is the Jilaal, the long dry. January and February see almost no rain at all. April to June is the Gu, the long rains, peaking in June at 81mm. July through September is the Hagaa, a shorter, cooler dry spell when the southwest monsoon knocks the edge off the heat. October and November bring the Deyr, the short rains, before December resets the loop. The ocean is the secret. You would expect equatorial heat to punish. Yet the constant sea breeze keeps the city livable. Even in April, the hottest month at 32°C (89°F), the wind works overtime. Still, 70 percent humidity year-round is real. It clings to shirts and slows your stride, when the rains arrive and the air turns thick.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
January and February win outright. Rainfall is effectively zero. Temperatures hold at 30°C (86°F) with humidity at its least annoying. Calm surf and clear skies dominate. This is prime beach time.
Cultural
The full Jilaal window, December through March, stays solid. No rain means dusty shoes, not soaked ones. Mornings start at 23°C (73°F), giving you a head start before the midday furnace blast.
Active or outdoor travel
July and August deserve a look. Temperatures slide to 28°C (83°F), the coolest numbers of the year. The southwest monsoon whips up a steady breeze. Rainfall is lighter than the Gu peak. The drop in heat balances the sticky air better than any other stretch.
Budget-conscious travel
October and November see fewer travellers because of the Deyr rains. Conditions stay workable. Temperatures hover around 30°C (86°F) and showers come and go, not pour all day. Pack a light shell and keep plans flexible.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Mogadishu.

Year-Round Essentials
Lightweight, breathable clothing (cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics)
works best at 70 percent humidity because anything that traps heat will wear on you quickly, regardless of month.
A compact umbrella or packable rain jacket
earns its place in your bag year-round, even the Jilaal dry season produces occasional coastal showers, and the Gu peak demands proper rain gear.
High-SPF sunscreen
is non-negotiable given the near-equatorial sun angle, which remains punishing even when temperatures feel moderate.
A reusable water bottle
keeps hydration accessible through the heat.
Oral rehydration salts
are worth tucking in as a precaution if the combination of warmth and any stomach adjustment catches you off guard.
Insect repellent with DEET
is advisable throughout the year given the coastal and tropical conditions.
A dedicated lip balm with UV protection
rounds out the essentials, the sun intensity here affects exposed skin in ways travellers from temperate climates often underestimate.
Jilaal dry season (December through March)
Clothing
loose, light layers, a long-sleeved cotton shirt you can remove, breathable trousers or linen pants
Footwear
comfortable sandals for daytime
Accessories
a light layer for air-conditioned interiors
Layering Tip
Mornings at 23°C (73°F) can feel almost fresh before the midday heat arrives.
Gu rains (April through June) and Deyr (October and November)
Clothing
lightweight waterproof trousers or a rain skirt
Footwear
waterproof sandals or quick-dry footwear
Accessories
a dry bag for electronics, phone, camera, documents
Hagaa months (July through September)
Clothing
light layers
Layering Tip
The southwest monsoon makes light layers feel welcome in the evenings, and slightly less breathable fabrics than the rest of the year are tolerable during the cooler afternoons.
Plug Type
Type C and Type F power outlets, standard European two-pin round plugs
Voltage
220 volts, 50Hz
Adapter Note
If you are coming from the US, Canada, or Japan, both a plug adapter and a voltage converter or dual-voltage devices are necessary; a 110V device plugged in without conversion will be damaged immediately.
Skip These Items
Heavy jeans or thick trousers A single-voltage hair dryer A heavy coat or jacket Shoes with complex lacing that take significant time to remove Heat-sensitive cosmetics or skincare products that don't tolerate sustained warmth
